FAQs About NDIS Recovery Coaching and Psychosocial Recovery Coaches

At Sunrise2Sunrise, we know that many NDIS participants and families have questions about how NDIS Recovery Coaching works, especially when it involves support from a Psychosocial Recovery Coach.

To help you make informed decisions, we’ve answered some of the most common questions below.

Recovery Coaching FAQs

What is an NDIS Recovery Coach?

An NDIS Recovery Coach is a specialist who provides coaching and support to people living with a psychosocial disability. A Recovery Coach helps participants build capacity, manage their NDIS plans, and work towards personal recovery goals. They combine mental health knowledge with coaching principles to empower participants to live with greater independence and control.

What is a Psychosocial Recovery Coach?

A Psychosocial Recovery Coach is a professional funded through the NDIS to assist participants with psychosocial disabilities.

While the terms “Recovery Coach” and “Psychosocial Recovery Coach” are often used interchangeably, the focus is always on mental health recovery, resilience building, and connecting participants to the supports they need.

Who can access Recovery Coaching through the NDIS?

Participants who have a psychosocial disability can access Recovery Coaching if it is included in their NDIS plan under Capacity Building – Support Coordination. This includes both standard Recovery Coaches and Psychosocial Recovery Coaches.

Is a Recovery Coach the same as a Support Coordinator?

No. While both roles assist with navigating NDIS plans, a Recovery Coach (especially a Psychosocial Recovery Coach) specialises in mental health recovery and resilience, whereas a Support Coordinator helps with broader service access and plan management across all disability types.

Can I have both a Recovery Coach and a Support Coordinator?

Yes. Some participants receive both supports if their NDIS plan allows it. A Recovery Coach supports mental health recovery, while a Support Coordinator helps connect to general disability services.

What does a Psychosocial Recovery Coach do?

A Psychosocial Recovery Coach will:

  • Help you develop and achieve recovery-oriented goals.
  • Support you to better understand and use your NDIS plan.
  • Connect you with mental health, community, and mainstream services.
  • Assist you during times of mental health crisis.
  • Focus on building resilience, skills, and self-management over time.

How often do I meet with my Recovery Coach?

Meeting frequency depends on your personal needs and NDIS plan. Many participants meet their Recovery Coach weekly or fortnightly, while others choose monthly meetings. Recovery Coaching is flexible and participant-led.

Do I get to choose my Psychosocial Recovery Coach?

Yes. Choice and control are central to the NDIS. At Sunrise2Sunrise, we work with you to match you with a Recovery Coach who understands your goals and personal preferences.

Is Recovery Coaching fully funded by the NDIS?

Yes. If you have Recovery Coaching listed in your NDIS plan, it is fully funded under your Capacity Building Supports budget.

Can a Psychosocial Recovery Coach help during a mental health crisis?

Yes. One of the key roles of a Psychosocial Recovery Coach is to assist during times of mental health challenges. They work with you to develop crisis plans and can help connect you with emergency mental health services if needed.

Is Recovery Coaching only for psychosocial disabilities?

Yes. Recovery Coaching is specifically designed for participants with psychosocial disabilities.

Can I change my Recovery Coach if it’s not a good fit?

Yes. You have the right to request a new Recovery Coach at any time.

Does a Recovery Coach replace clinical therapy?

No. A Recovery Coach complements but does not replace mental health clinicians or therapists.

Is Sunrise2Sunrise a registered provider of Psychosocial Recovery Coaching?

Yes. We proudly offer NDIS Recovery Coaching services with a focus on psychosocial recovery.
